BROWARD COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD DISTRICT 6

This West Broward school district covers a cross-section of Broward suburbia, including Weston, Sunrise, and portions of Cooper City, Davie and Lauderhill.  Two candidates won enough votes to compete in next week's runoff out of a crowded five-candidate primary in September.

They are Marty Rubinstein, 53, a quality-control manager at Brandsmart, and Phyllis C. Hope, 40, a registrar at Riverglades Elementary School in Parkland.

Mr Rubinstein has been active in Sunrise municipal politics, has raised much more money and has garnered most of the key endorsements in the race, including from the Broward County AFL-CIO, teachers, firefighters and construction groups.

Mr. Rubinstein gets our nod, too.

He is knowledgeable, and has a more-inclusive vision for the district.

Ms. Hope says she is running "because of the corruption and to help all the children of Broward County."  But that doesn't include putting more resources into teaching students a second language, primarily Spanish, in elementary school: "No, this is America, and they should be teaching English," was her response on this subject.

Mr. Rubinstein would work to stop wasteful spending, encourage more cooperation between municipalities and the School Board and incorporate technology into school systems and classrooms.

For Broward School Board, District 6, the Herald recommends MARTY RUBINSTEIN.
