SCHOOL BOARD PICK RUBINSTEIN On Nov. 5, all Broward County voters will elect one School Board member in a countywide nonpartisan election to fill the at-large District 8 seat, while voters living in District 6 will elect another member. Board members earn $35,782 and serve a four-year term. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel Editorial Board makes these recommendations to voters: District 6: Marty Rubinstein Marty Rubinstein is the better candidate in the District 6 School Board race, covering Weston, Sunrise and parts of Davie, Cooper City and Pine Island Ridge. Rubinstein, 53, of Sunrise, is a manager of computer services for BrandsMart USA. He and his wife have two children in public schools, and he has been heavily involved in public schools as a volunteer. If elected, Rubinstein says, he would lobby the state to increase school funding and teacher pay. He favors proposed state amendments on the November 5 ballot to mandate smaller class sizes and require the state to provide pre-kindergarten classes for 4-year-olds. He wants to use his computer expertise to help the school district improve how it handles computer technology. He believes the district is operating without direction and oversight. He favors naming a panel of residents and business people to define district needs and ways to fill them in a cost-efficient way. Rubinstein has served as first vice president of Banyan Elementary PTA, chairman of the Banyan Elementary Advisory Forum and as a member of the Sunrise Economic Development Board and vice-chair of the city Planning and Zoning Board. He is vice president and past president of the Sunrise Regular Democratic Club. He previously lost a race for Sunrise City Commission.
